Data and calculation methods

01 · How gold weight and value are calculated

Contribute the same USD amount once each month, including both selected months. Buy fractional troy ounces at that month's average price and hold all purchases through the ending month.

Gold weight purchased = monthly USD contribution / monthly USD gold price
Accumulated gold weight = sum of gold weight purchased each month
Ending value = accumulated gold weight × ending month's gold price
Average cost = total contributions / accumulated gold weight
Estimated cumulative return = (ending value − total contributions) / total contributions × 100

Each selected month must have a valid observation. No missing prices are invented or carried forward. Monthly average prices are known after the month and do not represent an executable trading strategy.

02 · What is the gold price based on?

The English calculator uses World Bank Gold monthly averages directly in USD per troy ounce, interpreted as a fine troy ounce of pure-gold content under the LBMA quoting convention. Displayed troy ounces are simulated fine-gold weight, not the gross weight of a particular retail bar. No THB conversion is applied to English results.

The workbook describes the earlier series as the UK 99.5%-fine London afternoon fixing and, from June 2025, a spot average of daily rates without further detail on purity. Applying the fine-troy-ounce basis throughout is the model's interpretation of the international quoting convention, not additional confirmation from World Bank. The source observations are retained without substituting futures or live prices.

The Thai version estimates the value of a 96.5% gold bar weighing 15.244 grams per baht-weight. One such bar contains 14.71046 grams of fine gold. Its conversion is:

Gold USD per fine troy ounce × THB per USD × (15.244 / 31.1035) × 0.965
= estimated THB per baht-weight of 96.5% gold

No additional division by 0.995 is applied. This estimates fine-gold content value; it is not the TFEX Gold Futures settlement formula or a Gold Traders Association quote. Multiplying monthly gold and FX averages can differ from averaging daily converted prices. Thai estimates exclude local premiums and have not been calibrated against executable dealer prices. Calculations retain full precision; only displayed figures are rounded.

03 · What is annualized return (XIRR)?

XIRR accounts for the timing of recurring contributions. Lump-sum CAGR is not used for DCA. Each monthly contribution is a negative cash flow, and terminal portfolio value is positive. For illustration, all flows use calendar month-end dates, with a 365-day basis. This timing assumption does not imply that the monthly average was a tradable month-end quote.

Annualized return is unavailable for a single month. Short holding periods can produce extreme annualized results.

Σ CFᵢ / (1 + r)^((dᵢ − d₀)/365) = 0

04 · What is gold DCA?

Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means buying gold with the same amount of money at regular intervals, such as $100 each month. The same amount buys more gold when prices are lower and less when prices are higher.

Key features

  • Spreads purchases over time instead of buying everything at once.
  • Makes it easier to set a budget and plan regular gold purchases.

Limitations

  • You can still lose money if gold prices fall and your holdings become worth less than you paid.
  • If gold prices rise steadily, gradual purchases may accumulate less gold than buying with the same total amount at the start.
  • Fees and the difference between buying and selling prices can reduce returns.

This tool uses historical data to simulate accumulated gold and its estimated value, excluding trading costs. Past results do not guarantee future results.

05 · About this tool

DCAMaster Simulator V.1.2 is a free monthly gold DCA simulator. It was created to help you explore how different contribution amounts and time periods affect accumulated gold and historical results, using past monthly average price data.

The tool provides an initial illustration for education only. Results are estimates based on the assumptions explained in the calculation methods. They do not represent actual trades and may differ from real outcomes once transaction costs and trading conditions are considered.

Past statistics and returns do not guarantee future results. The calculation does not predict whether gold prices will rise or fall and should not be the sole basis for a financial decision. DCAMaster does not solicit or accept investments and does not provide investment advice or consultations.

06 · Sources and updates

Available data for this calculator: January 1960 – October 2026

The calculator uses historical monthly price data stored on this website, not live prices. The data is updated manually about once a month. The latest month shown depends on available data, may lag the current month and can be revised.

07 · Research: Gold DCA Optimization: 10-Year Leverage Study

This study examines gold DCA with reference to 10 years of historical statistics, comparing leverage levels from 1X–5X.

It explores the balance between returns and risk (Optimization) under specified assumptions.

The analysis considers returns, costs, and the risk of insufficient margin when gold prices fall.

Results are calculated using a model and estimated monthly data, with details and limitations provided in the report.

The study is for educational purposes. It does not recommend leverage or guarantee future returns.
